Graduate Spotlight: Ed Lawrence H. '16

Each De Marillac Academy graduate has a unique path and with great pride, we celebrate and honor our graduates and their accomplishments. In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, DMA will feature a graduate spotlight each month on our blog, in our e-news and on social media. Check out how our alumni are making a difference in their fields and communities.

What have you been up to since you’ve graduated from DMA?
I was at Saint Ignatius! I graduated from Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and graduated in May. During my time at SI I was an active member of the Campus Ministry (music ministry choir, head altar server and retreat leader), a stage manager for the performing arts department, and the president of the Filipino Cultural Club. I was also a part of the Asian Students Coalition and the Magis Program for Equity and Inclusion.

Congratulations! What’s next?
I will be studying nursing at Seattle University as a Sullivan Scholar.

Can you tell me more about what it means to be a Sullivan Scholar?
The Sullivan Scholarship is awarded to nine incoming students each year. The scholarship covers undergraduate tuition, housing and meals for the four year program.

What are you involved in that is bringing you joy/connected to your sense of purpose?
All the activities I was part of at SI gave me  purpose, joy and identity. I was able to learn more about myself in each activity and also create many meaningful relationships. During my summers, I participated in various internships that have helped me with workforce development and getting a glimpse of careers I would want to pursue.

What are your personal and professional goals for the near future?
I hope to start off my first year at Seattle U strong and  build great relationships. I also want to be a nurse or do something in the medical field.

Can you share how your time at DMA shaped you as a person and your career aspirations?
De Marillac  helped shape me as a person who values education and being a learner. DMA has given me the ability to have a greater future and reach greater goals that I thought I wouldn't have been able to achieve. They have taught me that I shouldn't let anything hinder my ability to do great things in the world. DMA, especially the Graduate Support Program has believed in me throughout my time in high school. They have always given me sound advice, helped me with the college process and provided financial support.
